Due to snow in the outlying areas, all Bethel area schools will start 2 hours late – today – Thursday, March 22. Buses are on snow routes.

There will be no half-day kindergarten programs. No preschool, ECEAP, and Head Start.

All late start and early release programs are canceled and there will be no out-of-district transportation. Morning classes at the Pierce County Skills Center are also canceled. There is no Challenge program and no transportation for Challenger Secondary School.

School Make-up Days Announced

The Bethel School District has rescheduled three school days, to replace those lost due to inclement weather in January. The school make-up days will be Friday, May 25, Friday, June 15 and Monday, June 18. There will be no school on Friday, Feb. 17. The high school graduation date/times scheduled for June 13 will remain the same. The last day of school is now June 18.

We are aware of a power outage that is affecting several of our schools. Tacoma Power is aware of the issue and is working on repairs. Schools will remain in session. Power is expected to be restored within approximately two hours. We will provide updates as they are known.

Change of Date for McTeacher Night - NOW Friday January 27th

ATTENTION - Through no fault of our own we have to change McTeacher Night. It will no longer take place this Thursday January 26th from 5 to 7, but will take place FRIDAY January 27th from 5 to 7.

McDonald's is giving us gift cards that entitle the winners to a Happy Meal a week for a year! We will be giving them away to students that come into the store and will also give some away to those who come through the drive-thru! Don't forget to wear your Grizzly Gear!

Readers are Succeeders are looking for volunteers

It has been an accepted fact that if a student can't read satisfactorily by the time he/she completes the third grade, that student probably will not graduate high school. Right now, the drop-out rate for Pierce County is 40%.

Our program is quite simple. We do try to do the things Ms. Oney, the school's reading instructor, has recommended: Give them time to read and help them to comprehend what they are reading.

The students come to the portable immediately after school is out, 3:00 p.m. They clean their hands, sign in, and have a healthy snack. This week they had peanut-butter-stuffed celery, a few seedless grapes, and a few cheese crackers. After some dialog, they do a little exercise -- like "Simon Says", then have a bathroom break. Then I read some, to help them to pay attention and comprehend. Then they have a time of reading with help from their tutors. Each child has a notebook where they keep track of the books they have read, and the new words they are learning, and write down their comprehension.

Basically, that is it. We'll probably make chains of new words and books. We hope to not only help them to read better, but to instill in them a healthy self-image as well as being a contributing part of a group and a love for reading.

We will give a stipend of $5.00 per session to a high school student who tutors, and will pay about 10 cents per mile for all tutors to help with driving expenses.
